shock question.

maybe i shouldnt have looked at the book and just did them the way i always have.

AC and CW, the difference is in the check valve inside the stationary vane and all those are the correct way around.

the red book says to position the vents to the top. but they were not at the to when they came apart. i check a few extras that i have here and some are vent at the top and some are at the bottom.

so i am thinking that the punch marks are just to indicate the position of the stationary vane so when the top plate is installed the vent are on either side or the vane.

any thoughts on it.
should i just carry on as if i was normal and ignore that bit of info that is in the red bible?

thank you

You want the vent holes at the top and the bypass with check valve at the bottom. Vent holes are for air, bypass is for fluid. You may not be able to bottom the flange out inside with the holes in the proper position, seal the threads with permatex.

Follow the red book, with a vent hole on either side of the stationary vane. I use the punch marks to get the cover back as originally assembled.

i find it strange that on the original ford ones when i took them apart they were assembled with the vent holes at the bottom. i am putting them as per the book.

i have found a few bits of incorrect info in that book so i double check.

thank you

The service bulletins also describe rebuilding the houdaille shocks.
i have the service bulletins open to page 538 images 1100-1116. i can not find where it tells the position of the orientation of the vents in relationship to the shock body.
i am not trusting that red book and i have shocks here that have not been apart with differently located vent pins.
the image in that red book is not correct compared to what i have opened up on the bench.
can you show me where it shows the exact orientation.

thank you.

thanks all
here is the plan. i have picked from my stock and found a set of four (AC and CW) shocks that are oriented such as the red book indicates and same as what you folks have said. i will use them for rebuilding.

still confusing as to why others are assemble differently.

thank you for your help.

Some of these have been apart before and may not have been properly re-assembled. I would follow the book. Who knows what has happened to them since they were new, almost 100 years ago. Just sayin'

Other hands have reworking the shocks since new, is the likely cause of the incorrect reassembly. Also verify that the correct parts are in place. Clean, clean, clean! I count threads below the cover before I disassemble, And put witness marks. Permatex used to seal the cover and clamp ring.

the thing is. there is punch marks on the plate and the housing that are at the bottom of the shocks. so if they were apart before they had to have been punched at assemble. kinda unlikely that would happen but yeah 98 years and anything is possible.

maybe the guy at ford that had the punch had too much punch.
