Shipping Rant

Why is it that some suppliers take so long to ship a part? I needed a steering worm gear and used a different supplier than I usually do because of a slightly lower cost. It was ordered 7/1 and shipped 7/9. The usual supplier would have had it out the same day or next day. So I sit and the coupe sits. Dang, that frosts my Toocus. Missed a good local show because of the delay. Dang.
OK, rant over. I feel better now.

Sometimes they are waiting for stock themselves. I have been waiting for a low/reverse shifter rail from my regular supplier for the last 2-1/2 months. Be patient is the word.

All of the vendors are interdependent on each other. Snyders who is probably the largest manufacturer and distributor of parts still relies on other vendors who manufactures specific parts. Everyone sells the same 2 blade fan from Snyders. Everyone sells Snyders Hi compression head. Other parts houses such as Brattons and Mike's are stepping out and manufacturing their own parts such as cast drums and transmissions. I have had the same situation happen to me with several vendors. When I designed ecommerce applications for a living I would always include a feature to indicate if the item was in stock at time of the order.

You can hardly beat the Post Office's Flat Rate Priority Mailing boxes. From Florida, I mailed three steering column drops to Hawaii, and the guy received them on the third day. The first day, they go by air to the largest airport near you, then they go to your post office.
Flat Rate is not always the cheapest. It is the best deal if it is heavy or going a long distance.
MIKE :)

TinCup you may have hit the nail on the head. The photo of the steering worm gear looks the same in all the suppliers' online catalogs, even to the flaws.

Ordered parts from Snyders on Friday. Parts arrived (USPS Priority) today -- Monday.

I "ONLY SHIP BY United States Post Office !!! UPS in my view [sucks!] Left boxes a mile down the street to another home?????? Boxes banged up.... Had a rebuild steering box/shaft looked like it was dropped from a 3 story building. Had to return it. I just bought 4 items off Ebay [California to N.Y. in 3 days] Never out of 340 + items never any damage or loss... USP Office is the best again in my view, WHY some part houses still believe in UPS??? Ask me how i really feel????L.O.L.

Snyder's is super fast. I'll pay a few extra bucks for a part knowing it will get to my door fast. Service is always great too.

With shipping I found that what we pay UPS and Fedex is much more expensive then what the businesses pay.

The produce stand up the street ships a lot out via UPS and I know they pay less then 1/2 what it costs me to ship the same weights (well about 8 years ago that was true). My wife was working there at the time and I was doing ebay stuff. She was taking care of the shipping and could not believe how much less the business paid to ship the same weight package.

I am with Pete on the USPS being a great asset. Usually quicker then they claim and never any damage for a reasonable price.

I deal mostly with Bratton's. Their shipping costs are pricey, but that is part of how there business model is to make money and be competitive. They pick and ship quick, more than once I got parts the next day for normal shipping costs. I live just 2 states away.

I don't know what changed with Mac's and their shipping speed but I know a number in our club including myself have written them off. As others have said you can't beat Brattons or Snyders. I love Mac's catalog but I ordered a bunch of parts for an engine rebuilt clinic over two weeks prior to the event and was sweating on getting the parts since it took a week just for them to pull the parts and ship. Don't even get me started on the $3 "you want it now" option they offer.

Any time I have ordered from Snyder's or Bratton's they would always call me if something wasn't in stock asking how they should proceed.

Thanks everybody. In reading "between the lines" there was a lot of good info in the replies, even though it was just intended to be a rant!
Rant over! Thanks again.:)

One thing i must add .....Bratton's i have 1 issue,,, is the cost of shipping /postage...$11.50 ????? This to me is a total rip off...sorry but true. I sometimes place a order for parts that WILL FIT in a FREE Post office box[priority mail ] and a charge of $5.00 postage. that's it ,,the small box ..for this Bratton's should use this service,,..I use this service all the time and ship all over the U.S.A. and its always $5.00 and always there in 3 days or less.
