Shipping cost

Bob Drake is sending me a package that weights 18 pounds and the shipping cost is 50 dollars. I know, I can't drive out there and back for that but still that seems high. From Oregon to SC.

Depends on the size of the box. shipping has gone up a lot in the past year. $50 doesn't sound too much to me. You're talking about it traveling from one coast to the other.

Howell sheetmetal is sending large package from Texas to me in New Jersey, 22# for $41.Pete

If you know the size of the box and the weight, you can go to FedX web page and determine what your shipping cost would be from you to Drake.. That will tell you if Drake has included a hefty "handling" charge.

I just sent some parts to a friend in Ohio from Calif. The box was 9 lbs. and cost $39.90, Shipping is a rip off these days. Fed Ex, UPS, and the USPS all got increases due to high fuel costs. Now the fuel costs are about half what they were and the charges are still going up.
I try and buy parts where I can take advantage of free shipping if possible.(Summit, Speedway, EBAY, etc.)

I ordered a small vial of Red Fuel gauge liquid from Classic and Exotic -Vial cost $18 postage cost $65 (to New Zealand) -when you live down here postage is something you just factor into the cost of owning a vintage vehicle -Karl

Not that I like it, but same here, depending on the order it can cost more fire shipping than the parts.
But you wait and get inventive and get someone coming up from outside to bring the big stuff up, especially tires.

There is no such thing as free shipping, it's built into the cost of the item. If the 9lb item was over sized I can see the cost but if it will ship in a flat rate box...

50 for shipping sounds about right from bob drake even though Oregon has a main fedex hub in Portland it has to get from drake to Portland which is where the fuel cost comes in at.

Not only by weight but package size increases cost. FedEx has the best rate in most cases. 3rd party shippers may add their fees which make it more costly.

I used FedEx to ship a 13# part coast to coast. They picked the package up at the persons house and it will be about $25.

I just sent a box yesterday, 19 lbs from Jax FL to Detroit MI area and it was $18.81. With that said it was a small box and large boxes such as a sheetmetal repair piece could cost more because the demensional size can affect the price

So-Cal Phoenix shipped my (4) wide

5 ford steel rims to my Nebraska location by ups this past month for $86.00, these were the commercial heavy center rims as well.

Let's face it, These places have figured out a new way to increase their bottom line at our expense. hey could use the Post office flat rate boxes and save us money, but they get "deals" from UPS and FedEx for their volume shipping, so that's the way they go. Shipping used to be a secondary amount , but now it's a profit maker for them.

Believe me, Bob Drake has a deal with ups for his volume shipping. The cost lies in them picking it up. Still, if regular ups rate is say $35, his actual rate is about $22 ( or less). It's the handling and pickup fees that bump the price ...

The only time I will order from Drake is with a free shipping code. I just ordered from Drake with a free shipping code that was emailed to me. The online parts lookup (now) tells you if an item is in stock on line - no tax, no shipping, and it was shipped the next day.

Last time I got a usps flat rate box shipped to me it got lost in a recirculating loop was quiet funny at the time watching it go back and forth from Spokane to Seattle to Portland then back to Seattle. Until it showed up finally with the parts stolen. The parts were taken in Phoenix and a empty box with a big hole in the side somehow kept getting shuffled around lol.

May be somewhat true, but the big shippers get large discounts on the shipping cost. I purchase a lot from Amazon because of the free shipping and sometimes the prices are higher than other sources, but no where near the difference shipping cost would add. That coupled with 2 day delivery (often one day) and it is hard to beat. Almost all of what I send to family members goes this way now.
