Shippers damage again

Hi Jeff,

Did anybody inquire yet?

Might be a New Post Office Rule; like mandatory processing their packages in a Trash Compactor to save space in their delivery trucks ..... nothing else makes much sense to me either ....... lately, that is ...... as we gracefully age.

:p:p:p I think you hit on something w/ the trash compactor theory I hadn't thought of that! H.L always has the best perspectives!

Lady at the Post Office was very kind and helpful, The parts were about $80 and she said they will back the full amount!

I didn't expect that maybe it helps when you approach the desk with a friendly attitude and not get mad at them? That goes farther than showing anger on a lot of instances like this.

On another note I sent a distributor to a fellow on the V-8 side off of our '36 for a rebuild, a lady from his shop called me Thursday and said 'We got your part' but the rotor was broken. Not a big deal I needed a new rotor anyway but curious as to how it got cracked and broken! Maybe from shipping don't know I didn't see it when I sent it. Thought I packed it up pretty tight guess I goofed:confused: She said they will take care of it. USPS, Priority Mail smallest box they had!

Hey Fordors,
Very practical and real world advice ! My experience shows that you are correct in your advice also.
I did pack two different rare transmissions into wooden boxes with packing/cardboard outer packaging also....they both were smashed like a dozer ran them over ! So, my experience is that the heavier the item, the more likely that there will be damage...ergo, more extreme measures must be taken to try to prevent damage. UPS has done the worst job, without a care. USPS hasn't damaged any, but lost track of a package.

We all have different experiences. I have never had a package damaged by UPS or lost but I have had one damaged and three lost by USPS. Wayne

Regarding Shipping. It doesn't get any better than this. I friend ordered a heavy piece of machinery. The shop that placed his order called to advise his order had arrived.. He went to pick up His order. It was all broken up. they ask if he still wanted his order ( where do they find these people ?) He answered Hel- No. He asked how did his happen. (once again where do they find these People ) and was told " The Shipping Co. told them " It was like this when we Picked it up." Next He was told " We can reorder and "we won't charge you again for Shipping"Lastly ( Where Do They Find These People )

I find that anything packed in those Styrofoam peanuts will shift and end up on the bottom of the box. Think about it...they are loose and gravity takes over.
Better to wrap the parts in bubble wrap or newspaper, tape the heck out of that, and then fill the box with peanuts if you must. I have had better luck with crumpled newspaper than styrofoam peanuts.
Smaller parts like bolts and small brackets do well wrapped and taped in several grocery store bags or zip locks, and then over wrapped in newspaper and taped.
It seems to work out well the larger you make the internal package, then it can't escape through a split in the box.

> I am still waiting delivery on a Model A rear spring that FedEx Ground lost 3 years ago. I'm sure it got kicked to the side of the loading dock for being awkward and heavy. It was traced immediately, showed up as received at 2 terminals and then went off the radar. A gennie part gone forever apparently.

My KBS paint guy shipped a box of paint to a customer and he never received it, but one of the neighbors down the road a bit called KBS and told them he found the box in a roadside ditch,it looks like the FED X driver booted it out the door instead of making the delievery.

That or a thief didn't find what he needed inside the box he stole.
I've had my mail taken from the box and thrown around on the yard.

We HAD a FedX guy that was pretty lazy. He was always not delivering your stuff and marking it down on his sheet as 'customer not home' that sort of thing. Did it constantly. The people at the local FedEx place would know immediately, when you called, that J. was 'on the job'. They had all sorts of complaints about him.

They finally fired him.
