Anybody have a hot tip how to peel shim packs easily?

Seems like I get more than I want at one time. I'm using an Xacto knife trying to get one shim at a time. Help, this is BORING!

Thanks...

With the blade bring up an edge and if it is more than one shim just work that amount you have raised apart.

Thanks guys,

Im assuming the soldering iron heat softens the adhesive
That laminates the 0.0005 shim stock together. I'll give it a try.

Not sure what or where you got your shims. The ones from the suppliers are about .002 to .003 each leaf.

Redmodelt,
You are correct. The shim layers are 0.002" as I have discovered. I guess the first mic. reading was read incorrectly. BTW. the soldier heat works well with separating the shim package.

Thanks to all.

'Caveman method' for peeling shims:

Since my eyeballs are crummy, I really need a lot of help in seeing the layers, so I take a small ball peen hammer and smash just a tiny corner of the stack of shims. This smashes them out a little so that you can more easily see the distinct layers and stab at the top shim with your fresh exacto knife blade.

Also note: the exacto blade is perhaps good for maybe peeling four or five single shims before it becomes too dull to continue getting clean single layers.
