shim material for shock arms

Quick question, When I pulled the dif I noticed that both rear shock arms were extremely loose on the shock stud. What can I use to shim up the arms to tighten them up/ideas? I noticed that both arms were clamped down so there is no gap. I do have shim material but trying to wrap it around the shock stud and then slide the arm over it will just mash it up.

Thanks,

Mike

You can cut your shim stock into pieces about 1" x 1", slip the arm onto the shock, put the bolt through but don't tighten it, then slip the shim stock down the gaps on the sides of the stud. Then tighten. Steel shim stock is easily obtained in several thicknesses, like this stainless steel set from the river store.

Y-hadn't thought about opening up the gap. If that doesn't work I may look at the steel stuff. The brass bends easily around the shock stud but also mashes easily trying to get it in the gap.

I have had this problem. Shims are a pain in the derriere to cope with. Open the gap, and if that does not work, get another arm that is not worn-out. The shock arms wear from being loose, so when greasing the suspension, check all of them to assure they fit tightly. Also check the Pitman Arm of the steering because it is of the same design.

If the shock arm is not too bad and the gap to the shaft(not stud) is close but the shim doesn't quite fit, drive a small cold chisel in the gap to slightly spread it (best done off the shock).

Update: folded the shim stock around the shock shaft and was able to get the arms on and locked down tight. Pain to shimmy the arm on but was able to, thank you all for the help.

Noticed a couple loose shock arms while at the first French Lick meet, I cut shims out of a beer can. Worked great, they might still be on the car two owners later ......
