Shifting transmission

Thank you all very much.

The shift forks do line up perfectly, and the reworked original shift lever fits the slots with a small amount of clearance.

I have fought my idle speed, and adjusted the float level, without success. I have the plug and clear tube, so I can see the level on the car. Just no success. I do have a rebuilt Marvel from a gentleman in Texas, so I'm going to put that on.

I will see if the idle speed solves the problem.

I really appreciate and value all of the input provided, to solve my problem.

Thank You All, Again;

What's new and crisp" the tower the trans or both? My question is what were your symptoms before and what are they now? What was changed ?
Bryans' rails & plungers are new & require a little "slap" to get the plunger to climb out of the grooves, very NORMAL, they "may" limber up a bit, with a lots of driving.
REMEMBER, this is a GOOD thing, since the plungers & the grooves in the rails are the ONLY thing that holds it in gear!!
Betcha' they were "crisp" when NEW!
Saw pics where some dumb *** beveled the edges of the detent grooves, DON'T DO IT! It "might" contribute to jumping OUT OF GEAR:eek:
You're OK, Bryan, just DRIVE IT:D:D:D Buster T.:cool: approves this message:D

Bill; thank you. I am going to change the carb and get the idle speed I can be proud of.

Those detentes are crisp and positive. The tower appears to be pristine. The forks line up perfectly.

I am looking forward to many miles of happy driving.

Thank You; and Thank You to the Barn members, that took the time to read about this, and offer some positive advise.

Thank You Very Much;

Re: Shifting transmission UPDATE

I changed the idle speed down to a nice low rolling chug.

Shifting from first to second while accelerating, and back to first (while stopped), went perfectly, really hard to believe how pleasant tonight's cruise went.

Thank You ALL; again for all the positive tips and suggestions.

Thank You;

"Chicken plucker chicken plucker chicken plucker..." sounds about right. (From Mike Flanagan's Ahooga posts).

Please; what does this mean????

Minerva went, TADA-TADA-TADA-TADA----With slight throttle increase, she sounded like a HAPPY clucking Chicken, scratchin' in he dirt, for BUGS! When a car did that, in high gear, spark up & idling along, Chief called it, "CADILLACING" & the sign of a PERFECTLY tuned engine.

Brian, you should report on the sound of the slow idle with the Marvel carb - I think the "Chicken Plucker" sound is not there as much with certain carbs like a Tillotson.

I get it more with my roadster (Zenith) than I did with my other A which ran a Tilly.

Of course if you get the urge to compare, there are like 1,000 guys who have posted the sound notes on Youtube!

PS - great tip on the slow idle, makes perfect sense as it will have same overall effect I think, as the 600W (which I changed back to recently from the modern stuff) - what I have found about these cars are ideal conditions - how they run, shift, keep cool in hot weather, etc. are achieved incrementally. And little improvements tend to be noticeable, going to have a look at my idle speed this weekend as well. IMHO the 600W makes a difference based on my experience with both fluids as well.

Steve; I could never get any carburetor to idle down like this Marvel. When it's idling, and I push the retard lever fully up, you can just about hear every cylinder fire.

The 600W oil you refer to- where did you purchase it? Or are you referring to the 600 W from the preferred suppliers?

Thank You;

Brian, sounds like you scored with that carb - good for you!

Nothing special about the 600W I use, I get mine from Tam's - I notice they label it as "made in the USA" which I do not recall from when I used to buy it a few years back, not sure if there are multiple suppliers of this but I am aware of at least one restoration shop that buys in bulk under "Steam Cylinder Oil" category. They use in a lot of prewar cars in addition to our Fords. I notice a definite difference vs. the typical modern replacement - but as you know opinions vary on that.

Great looking sedan, BTW - just the thing for NE touring now that the weather is changing. Although they say it will hit 70 today - would be a great day for the roadster but no such luck, stuck here in the office..

Work at fixing your stall problem 1st. If you have a Zenith the problem is with the fuel level or it needs rebuilding. Try resetting the fuel level and it should stop stalling. Set the idle at the correct rpm and see if your shifting problem goes away. Maybe your clutch needs to be slightly adjusted also. It might be engaging too low so the idler gear can't properly slow down to allow smooth gear changing.
