Shifting lever install

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this has already been answered. I did a search but could not find an answer.

I am trying to put the spring and clip back on the shifting lever. I have the tool, but it will not fit down between the two rods holding the shifting forks (hope this makes sense, kind of new to Model A's). Also, the two prongs don't seem to fit between the spring coils, appear to be too thick. Do I need to modify the tool?

And last but not least, where does the clip install, over the first, second, or third detent? If it is the third (deepest), how do you get the clip down in there?

Any tricks to help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Jim

Not sure which tool you have.

I have used both the tubular 'push down' ' tool and the lever-type. Both work best with the forks and shift rails removed.

The lever type is easiest... and the fingers that capture the spring need to be down about two coils below the end of the spring.

There are several diagrams of how the clip is installed at many supplier websites.

Thanks, I am using the tubular type tool, it says I can do it with out removing the forks. Should I remove them?

I will look for a diagram, thanks
Jim
