shifting a Mitchell

Update: did a test drive tonight with my new Mitchell OD. Love it! Going to take a few drives to learn how to shift it from OD to normal. The only issue I have is no speedo, will have to figure that out later. Hopefully I didn’t shred it, it was seated in the case fully, and rotated after I hooked it up to regular speedo cable. Thank you all.

Rev the engine a little on downshift. Mine was a little shift when new also. You can also downshift from 3rd to 2nd by putting the Mitchell in neutral.

Experiment and have fun!

Deco - the speedo cable carrier is quite a tight fit into the overdrive case. You can tell you have it in properly when the o-ring goes down completely into the case, it will be quite a push to get it in. You’ll feel it go thunk when it goes. A bit of silicone grease on the o-ring, and some wiggling and cussing, helps. Once you get it in, don’t forget a dab of Permatex on the set screw.

Jay, thanks. i thought I had it pushed all the way in as I could not see any O ring and the top of the cable housing was flush. I will try and push a little harder next time and see if it seats.

When you ordered the overdrive, did you order the one to match your speedo? The oval speedo and the round speedo use different cable extensions.About 10 years ago I ordered an OD unit, for an oval speedo car.By the time I got around to using it the oval speedo car was gone and I installed it in a round speedo car.I had to buy the correct cable extension for it to work.

OK, I cralled under the car today and checked the speedo cable going into the case, it was seated and down nice and tight. Then I checked the connection between the original and Mitchell speedo cables. Mine has a square tip-like it should but the Mitchell had a round opening. At least that is what I am seeing. Am I missing something here?

I ordered a late 30-31 adapter and that is what the cable said on the tag. So if what I saw is accurate then either I have the wrong cable in the housing or I got an incorrect adapter from Mitchell. Not mad at them at all because it is a great workmanship. I will call them on Monday to square thing up or figure out what I did wrong.

if the female end of the adapter has a round hole and a slot coming off of it that would engage a “flag” on the cable then it sounds like you ended up with an adapter for the oval speedos used 1928 through early 1930. It is bizarre that you would have one mislabeled like that. But I’m sure that Steve and Cindi will make it right by you. Let us know how this resolves!

I belong to the 5% of folks that have a Mitchell with a shifter mounted cable control. I drive in the mountains most of the time and use it as a 5 speed. 1-2-2h-3-3h.
I drive it exactly like you would a farm truck with a two speed rear end.
Split shifting is a breeze with a single motion. Move the cable as you shift the lever.
I have the same setup in three different model As and would not have it any other way.
