Shift Linkage

Speaking of three speed transmissions, is there a standard procedure for the initial setup and adjustment for the shift linkage on a remote shift three speed transmission in a 1947 Ford? Thanks.

With the transmission shift arm in the neutral position the shift arms at the column should be level or on the same plane with each other. You'll know when it's right by pulling back and forth on the shift lever in the car. If not then adjust the rods , the rod ends at the transmission are threaded for adjustment.

To add to what Ken said, Make sure lecer is in neutral and the shift levers on the transmission on the transmission are locked in the neutral detent. The rods should then be adjusted so they easily slip into the hole with no movement on the shifter or transmission.

You can feel the trans. shifting arms slip into the indent position as Frank described.

I had to shorten the second/high rod to clear the Offy head when in second. That resulted in a mismatch in going through the H, and had to similarly shorten the low/reverse rod. With both shift arms on the transmission in the neutral detent, be sure the shift arms on the column are in the same plane. I overdid the adjustment and had trouble with the transmission slipping out of high gear. Took our some of the shortening adjustment to just barely have clearance from the head in second, and fully into the high gear detent to avoid popping out of high.
