Shaving the Head

The head on my '29 engine is estimated to be about .006 high in the center portion. What's the max it could be machined to get it true? Thanks!

Hi Jim: The machinist will mill it down until it is flat, which is usually more than the straight edge and feeler gage tell you. I have surfaced several that required .018 to make flat. A straight head and block make sure that you can hold a head gasket.

I bought a "Head with a large B" aka Police head in 1963 and it needed to be milled .015. I am still using the head today and it does not leak. It has been on several engines and on/off several times to try Thomas and Lion Heads during that time.

I stamped (with number stamp set) the .015 on the head so I know how much it has been milled.
