Shattering Fan Blades - myth or ?

Yes, they are, with a slight point deduction for not being an original fan.
Until a few years ago you had to have an original fan to have the car judged.

From Judging Standards (revised 2011):

"An original style non steel two bladed fan will automatically receive a significant point deduction."

Not sure that is still the case, but I just got the JS book in December.

Is not the aluminum blade accepted for judging??

On page 9 revised 2011 of the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards the 14 point preliminary Judging requirements are listed. It states the Two Blade fan shall be original type. So the reproduction Aluminum fan would result in an automatic 50% reduction in points for being reproduction.

as I understand it

seen it twice on tours in the 1990s.
one was an original fan that punched a hole in a top hood panel,
the second was a steel four-blade that whacked the radiator.
no myth......

Not just for morbid curiosity or to stir up this hornets nest too much more, but statistically someone must have been killed in the 80+ years of these things. I also got the new alum fan. It seems a reasonable tradeoff to authenticity for safety - no airbags tho :-)
