Serpentine Belt? What the…

Calling on Meccanixs out there.

Installed SERP belt quiet for 15 miles?

Parked car came back later belt now squeals. It becomes quiet step on the gas starts to squeal. Water trick still squeals.

Stethoscope on all pulley operated items except Damper. No noise.

The tensioner has tension.

On a new belt, the 6 groves are not as well defined until after operation for a bit—-the quiet period at first?

Diagnosis? I’m thinking the belt is slipping, correct belt. Dirty pulleys? Cheap belt?

Re: Serpentine Belt? What the…

That is a 5.0L retrofit?

1) Quality of belt (MOTORCRAT or GATES)

2) All pulley sheaths clean - no residue. No glazing (belt or drive pulley).

3) To insure correct belt length, there are marks on the tensioner bracket. You will see two marks and an arrow. With the belt installed and tensioner applied, the arrow will (should) fall between those two marks.

4) With belt removed, turn all accessory drive pulleys by hand to find any binding. Ensure all pulleys are aligned.

Did you get your steering box situated?

Kultulz:

With reading, video watching you are the First to mention the indicator on the belt tensioner.

Just an amazing amount of information you have! Thank you.

Don’t have the time to sort out the box yet….

... forgot ...

With the belt off and using the release tool, move the tensioner through it's full travel to check for any binding and full return.

Did they tell you what the donor engine was taken out of?

Re: Serpentine Belt? What the…

In '98 a put a 5.0 out of a '94 Mustang GT in my '40 coupe. I kept the original serpentine system on the engine. I had trouble keeping a belt from squealing for any length of time. I finally put a Goodyear Gatorback belt on it and it stayed on the car until I sold it, many thousands of miles.

Re: Serpentine Belt? What the…

The Goodyear Gatorback belt was the best type until they were changed over to Continental. It was the Continental Elite rebranded after that but I don't think anyone makes them anymore. These types did NOT squeak unless a pulley froze up. All good things come to an end. They wanted to sell new belts and that product wouldn't wear out fast enough.

I purchased a new Continental OE belt to replace the Elite belt and it started squealing right away. I took it off and reinstalled the old Elite belt and it's still going strong 6-years later.

What alternator do you have?

I think it's called a One Wire? I bought the vehicle w/o much information on it and what was stated is incorrect. I've been verifying items for some time now and next on my list is the block number behind the starter but it does have a reverse pump and a 94 timing cover.
The alt has been keeping up with non factory AC

Kultulz and Gentlemen:

Sometimes my mechanical ability is wanting...of course there is a mark on the Tensioner for proper adjustment..thanks for reminding me Kultulz.
The attached photo shows the belt is too large and the next sized belt is .20 inch and next one is .40 shorter in length.

Which one do you suggest? If I measure the end stop of blunt point to mid point between markers, does it accurately reflect what I should deduct?

Yes those gatorback belts look great expensive, contacted the new owners of Company and they are unable unwilling? to cross reference my belt, what BS.

...of course there is a mark on the Tensioner for proper adjustment..

To be exact, it tells you the belt is of the correct length and the tensioner (if operating correctly), determines designed tension on the drive belt.

If your present belt is too long, the easiest way out of it is to buy the shorter belt(s), install to determine correct length and return the one not needed.

The QUALITY of the belt is very important. If a CHI-CON SLOPPY COPY, they may be removing them from destroyed SHERMAN TANKS during the KOREAN war ... er ... conflict.

The ALT should be a MOTORCRAFT 3G ONE-WIRE rated @ 130A,

There will be ID INFO stamped on the case.

545809

Is it using the factory SANDEN AC COMPRESSOR?

Re: Serpentine Belt? What the…

If it's only squealing at start up, Ford has a soft start regulator for the 3G. I believe it is white in color.
