Separating ****** from engine

Took my 317 y block out of my 54 lincoln capri with the power glide ****** attached. I'm having difficulties getting the two apart. I have all the bolts out of it and there is separation between the two most of the way around but one side won't come apart. There is a small space between them but I don't want to damage anything from being too aggressive. Anybody have any advice? Am I missing something?

The hydro has a “torus”, which is a fluid coupling. Looks like a torque converter from the outside. I’m pretty sure you need to unbolt that to pull the trans back, but I can’t remember why. Too many years, and only one hydro in my background.

The hydros are damned heavy. Use due caution, they can hurt you.

My mistake, FLUID COUPLING. Regardless, it has to be connected to the engine flywheel to generate hydraulic pressure through a pump -

In automotive applications, the pump typically is connected to the flywheel of the engine—in fact, the coupling's enclosure may be part of the flywheel proper, and thus is turned by the engine's crankshaft. The turbine is connected to the input shaft of the transmission. While the transmission is in gear, as engine speed increases, torque is transferred from the engine to the input shaft by the motion of the fluid, propelling the vehicle.

In this regard, the behaviour of the fluid coupling strongly resembles that of a mechanical clutch driving a manual transmission.

You do have a 1954 LINC WSM for references don't you?

Relax Kultulz, . They all feel the same when you drop one on your foot.

Google “removing hydromatic transmission”. There’s a number of videos. I don’t think it matters what they’re coming out of, a hydro would mount the same. And there’s lots of variations of them. Bullet proof, heavy duty, widely used. The basis for the famed Hydro Stick from the gasser wars

I have a shop manual for the car but it has nothing at all about the ******. Probably because it's a gm part.

If it's like the Hydros I've removed, it's required that you rotate the engine and take all the bolts holding the torus (?) cover to the flywheel and then the trans can be pulled back. There is probably a drain plug in the cover so you don't get drenched when you pull it back. Large diameter O-ring between the two pieces to keep track of too.

Thanks Rich. I thought just removing the mounting bolts to the engine was all I needed to remove and pull the trans back. I guess I go thru the starter hole to remove the bolts. I appreciate all the help on here

Here is an ILL. Supposedly there are twenty cap screws holding the cover onto the flywheel -

Let me try this again -

Below are ILL of the manual(s). They are available on EvilBay.

Here is a quality parts source - https://www.charlietranny.com/Hydramatic.htm

Sorry about that. You know how bad war-time help can get ... :o
