Self adjusting needle and housing thread issue

I just installed a new adjusting needle and a new adjusting needle housing. Both are threaded. The housing screws into the carb, and the needle strews into the housing. Well to get the needle to even catch any threads, I had to pry apart the little slots in the end of the housing, then it was able to catch the threads and work properly..
Has anyone had to do this before?

I ordered the spring kit that goes above all of this so now I will hopefully have a functional choke. Pet my previous posts I have quite a smoking issues while driving. I'm really thinking is running so rich and that is why it's smoking... The chokes screw has previously been basically unscrewed all the way.. So know I'll be able to screw it in and back it out the 1/2 to 1/4 turns while driving, NAND NOT SMOKING, hopefully!!

GAV? What is that? And when the new pets came they were all seperate. That was the issue. When I put the needle into the housing it wouldn't screw in because it couldn't catch the threads until I opened the end up a little bit. Then it was able to catch the threads and screw in...

I think you are calling it the choke screw...

It's really called the Gas Adjusting Valve...GAV for short...

9525 & 9528 are/is the GAV.

How much are you [ well, the engine] smoking ? And, what kind/color of smoke ?

Read Page 13 and page 14 of the attached PDF file regarding installing the gas adjusting needle.
