Tried to start engine,it rolled over 3 times and seized. No prior trouble
starting. Removed plugs, starter.fan belt, distributor can't move with crank.
Also held in clutch.Any ideas. Have owned car 44 Years.

Many thanks,

Paul

maybe you lost a bendix bolt that is jamming the ring gear on the flywheel. I'd try putting it in 3rd gear and push the car backward to turn the engine back.

"But he said "Removed plugs,starter.fan ...". "

True, but is it possible that if something broke / came lose from the starter drive, it might be jammed between the rim the of the flywhee / ring gear and the bell housing ?

Might also pull timing cover first, to see if perhaps the cam gear lost a tooth and jammed ?

Sounds kind of odd for a babbit motor to just seize like that... did it crank normally prior to locking-up ?

I have had insert-bearing motors* spin a bearing-shell and lock-up...

*CLARIFICATION:
The insert-bearing motors I mention were "modern" engines that came with insert-bearings from the factory, not converted Ford or Chevy babbit-pounders; my point was: in a poured-bearing engine, there's nothing in the bearing dept. to break-loose and spin in the caps ( like a steel shell ).

Maybe you could push it backwards to see if something comes loose. Of course whatever the problem is would still be there.

You say you held in the clutch, but, was the transmitter in neutral?? Easy stuff first, put the transmission in neutral.. If thats not it, then I'd look for a broken starter drive bolt or camshaft gear problem before having to swallow some old dirty oil from removing the pan..

I've had one lock up from an old bendix bolt in the bellhousing. Of course I didn't figure out what it was until I had dropped the oil pan and pulled the motor! But it gave me an excuse to freshen up the motor.

Third area after the flywheel, and the timing gear might be to pull the top of the transmission, jack up the differential and see if the rear end is free. a broken ujoint is also a possibility. Bob

Hey Paul, you might want to check the bulb in the tail light also!

Reading this thread is a hoot!

A similar thing happened to me in my shop.I had just overhauled a Ford tractor and it seized. After much frustration,I pulled the starter. The starter pinion had broken and part of it was trapping the flywheel.Try that.

One of the 4 bolts that hold the flywheel housing could have worked out. On a recent motor the only thing holding in the finger tight bolts was the safety wire. Bob
