This is a shot of my 46 ford 1/2 ton that I just sold. My next project is a 53 Mercury 1/2 ton. It will be restored nearly stock. I say nearly because it will be driven very often and on the high way, so I am going with an S-10 five speed trans to keep my flat head running well for many miles. I am not new to flatheads but I must confess that it has been many years since I have owned and driven a flat head powerd ford. I can`t wait to dig into this old Mercury and get started on the resto journey. Thanks to all the ford barn guys on here for the tons of info and advise that is so freely passed on to your fellow enthusiasts.

Transmissions through 56 (except the T85s that went behind the high horsepower Y blocks) will bolt in. Last fall I helped install a 55-56 top loader in a 52 sedan and it just bolted in. My memory is that through 59 or so is all the same bolt up locations, just the input and output spline count is different. Worst case scenario, you get a later transmission and have to swap clutch disks and drive shaft yoke to bolt it up.

Where are you located?

I think the truck transmission is the same as the car in 53. I would check the input shaft length just to be sure.

Tique,
I'm going to chime in here after having driven some t5
flathead cars and trucks. The trans is so smooth and quiet it's a joy.
The ratios in the V6 version ( S 10 ) t5 fit a flathead perfectly.
I build a lot of old Ford transmissions including OD's and they are sure
enough good but that t5 has lots going for it.
