Sediament Bowl - simple question

The sediment bowl on my fordor was dirty so I removed it an cleaned it out. However, I can not get it to seal when I reinstalled it. It has a round fine screen filter and a black rubber-like gasket. Are there secrets to getting a seal. I am thinking of making a new cork gasket and trying that. Any suggestions?

Hi Joe. If its plain rubber it will melt a bit and never seal. Should be neprene (sp) I use a cork gasket for later model Chryslers. if nobody has a part number I will dig it up for you. In fact gotta change mine too.

While you are waiting for the new gasket,, slightly loosen the fastener and spin/turn the bowl with your fingers while you retighten it and see if that helps..

I run and prefer the cast iron sediment bulb. The ones that I have all use a lead gasket. The last cast sediment bulb repair kit that I got from Snyders included the LEAD gasket. I always use Permatex on the threads of the drain needle housing. I have also found that the threads on the old original brass needle housings are mostly worn to the point that you can't tighten them very much without stripping the threads. New needle housings are now available. I did use new drain needle housings on the last three that I rebuilt. good luck.

I have a cork gasket on my 1930 and it's been off and on a many times for a dump and wipe and has always resealed with just a little thumb pressure on the assembly screw under the glass. Post Script~ almost nothing found on the screen or in the glass.

skip.

I use a little more pressure than hand tight. pliers give it that extra tightness works for me!

I remove the sediment bowl from time to time to clean it and the cork gasket always seals with out a problem. Use cork not rubber!

Joe, sorry I tore the shop and trunk apart. I have been using cork from Sacremento Vintage ford. Part #00499. I know if you have a trusted auto parts store you use you should be able to dig around in the catalogs and find the Chrysler part number. They work grat. TB

Neoprene always gave me trouble.....sometimes it would curl up. I use nothing now but cork, and almost all the model a stores/catalogs carry them. They can be used over and over until the cows come home. Also, if you use one of those micro filters
in your sediment bowl-----toss it out as far as you can throw it! The mesh in those filters will wind up in your carb in no time at all, thanks to ethenol additive. Instead, use a NAPA filter that sits right in the bowl as pretty as you please. The NAPA number is 3039.

I got a set 5ea of the cork gaskets from SNYDERS and brass screens they work great (no leaks) about $1.50 forall 5 gaskets. part #A-9173-Q5

OK.late last night I found the cork gasket part number: Fel-pro #773 / "future number" 13-5004. Application is for Chrysler,GM, Ford and Willys. This is one of those on the road and gotta have it now deals.
