Screeching power steering

I have a 65 Mustang w/289 engine, alt, a/c and an Eaton power steering pump All new belts & hoses, fresh type F fluid. When first starting, I hear a high level screech which disappears after 10-15 seconds. Belt is as tight as I can get it. Any suggestions?:mad::mad:

When first starting, its usually the alternator trying to recharge the battery. Is the
battery in good shape? Less than five years old? Good clean connections?

A belt shouldn't be adjusted that tight or you'll trash the shaft bearings or bushing behind the pulley. The screeching noise may be coming from something other than the belt, like a just mentioned bushing or bearing. If the belts or pulleys have a slick glaze on them you can break it up with some coarse sandpaper.

Carefully.... hold a small hose from your ear to the bearing area of the: alt, water pump & PS pump while someone starts the car to see where the noise is coming from.

Maybe the sheave (pulley) is worn and it is time for a new one.
Think of this like you just put on new disc brake pads... with a worn rotor.

Most likely a glazed belt. Look it over, if it seems sunken into the pulley groove, it is probably shot. If the belt is old, it may be glazed. Belts are less pliable when cold and that's where the noise comes from. Either way, I'd just replace it.
