pulled the motor and trans from the ranchero also replaced the harness with an aftermarket one this car had a clutch pedal when i bought it it was tucked under the carpet although no holes for linkage were present it has a automatic in it and the saftey switch and b/u lights were never hooked up how do i wire the saftey switch so it will not start in gear as it does now not worried aboet b/u lamps as taillights do not have then it has 2 harness's coming from the switch setup what colors should i look for thanks

A clutch pedal lockout wasnt standard equipment untill much later. If you really want one, wire in one from a late model pickup or small car.

Bring me up to speed... what year and trans. I'm assuming you have the switch on your trans? Easiest way to determine which of the "2 harness's coming from the switch setup" to use, put the trans in park and check each set with a ohm meter (or continuity checker). I believe that one set has male connectors and one set has female connectors. (so the don't get mixed up accidentally). The set with continuity is the ones you want. Check them while in neutral also. The wire that runs from your "Start" terminal of the ignition switch to the solenoid t be cut and connected to these two wires.

In other words the wire from your ignition switch "start terminal" goes through the safety switch while in park or neutral then to the starter solenoid t complete the circuit.

Whew!! Hope your not as mixed up as I sound.

HAH, Rick types faster than me...

From the diagram that Rick provided it looks like the Red wire with blue stripe is the one you want. You stated you have a aftermarket wiring harness? Probably using GM colors... my Painless Harness uses purple.

For start circuit
Red/blu from Start terminal of ignition switch runs to neutral safety switch.
red/blu from neutral safety switch to start solenoid.

For BU lights
Run a wire from ACC terminal of ignition switch to terminal on neutral safety switch and run another wire from safety switch back out to your backup lights.

thanks all for the replies my harness also uses gm colors i will work that out the car was not built with reverse lights as it is a deluxe model with trim outlining the body lines i will post pics soon and i belive its a c4 3 spd i do know the motor and trans were installed in 1984 as per the rebuilb tag i found on the motor after 5 yrs i'll be happy to drive it
