Safety wire rods and mains?

Henry must have had a good reason to safety wire the rod and main cap nuts, but just how necessary is it? Any of you "not" do it?

I use Marsden rod nuts. I hate those cotter pins. But I do safety wire the early main caps. Just makes me feel better. I'm sure you bye those Marsden nuts and be just as good. Walt
 
I am doing the cotter keys and have worried half way through the job and will continue this time but not agian. Maybe I was too accurate on the size, tough to get through the notch & have to be hammered to insure clearance with the other ones, . They also look bad despite trying to not beat them up, plan on doing something better next time.
