S.V. 6 Question

I know this is not V8 but a friend has an ex army '42 Ford sedan with the 6 cyl engine which suffers from serious clutch judder although the drive train seems in good order. It has no engine stabilizer rods which he reckons it never had although I would have thought they would be as essential as for the V8 with the same drive train.
My question is did the 6 cylinder versions have engine stabilizer rods and if so where on the engine were they mounted.
Thanks, Geoff.

The rear mount under the trans on '42-8 serves as the locater, with its top and bottom parts bonded to a block of rubber meant to cushion without fore and aft motion. Earlier Fords had cushions that needed the rods to secure then in horizontal plane. Likely your rubber in rear mount has failed.
Options...
1. New stock mount, dodgy import quality. May well fail next week.
2. Aftermarket steady rod...VERY simple device from ancient catalogs, made of simple strap and rod steel, dimensions to make one are posted on here somewhere since JC Whitney ran out of them 50 years ago...
3. Adapt 1941 rods, full directions are in the Canadian service bulletins...their stock '42 mounts failed in the Libyan desert chasing Rommel, so they used this fix!

Thanks Bruce, I searched previous threads on the subject and it seems like most 42 on U.S.cars did not have steady rods and as you stated relied on the rear mount.I have over the years had two N.Z.assembled '47 Mercurys both of which had rods running to the front cross member from the mounts on the block.Maybe after market or Canadian original. As far as the 6 cylinder '42 car goes it would be worth the owners while to start by checking the rear mount and perhaps adapt some rods to run from the engine to the front cross member. If it had a replacement clutch from the prom ant rebuilder in Auckland the chances that it set up correctly is nil ,Ted

I would like to see the photos of these RODs in place.. my motor and transmission mounts are bad & on rough roads, the whole driveline shakes.. I need help with my Flathead 6!

Full directions on using the rods are in the Canadian Service bulletins...I'm retiring right now, and my copy is packed up and out of the office. From memory they are normal '41 rods and hardware requiring little more than a hole to mount the rear of each to the frame. Someone here will have the bulletins available!

Thanks, my friend has a 41 fordor sedan, I will look at his car .. Only book I have on the ford is the reproduction service book.. Any idea on where I can get the parts?
