Ryan Oil?

I would think 90-140 gear lube would be fine. I do not think I would want to run 600W.

My opinion,

Reading from past posts one suggested calling Dan Ryan , this was from 2011 , the consensus was using a multi viscosity modern gear oil , 85w-140 and NOT use 600w , Bert’s model a parts use to sell the ryan OD’s .

Had a Ryan; use per Endy's article but find GL4 spec. still available, less additives per the Ryan manufacture time.

The use of GL4 is consistent with any older unit that has soft metal bushings or thrust washers. The acidic qualities of GL5 is high enough to deteriorate the soft metals over time. The old Borg Warner overdrives have a roller type sprag clutch in the rear unit that can also have problems with high EP gear lubes. Motor oil can be used but it has to be the equivalent viscosity of the recommended gear lube. SAE 90 gear lube is equivalent to SAE 50 motor oil since they are graded differently.
