Ruxtell 2-Speed Rearend?

I have a '31 Victoria that has, what I've been told, a Ruxtell 2-speed rearend. It functions well and is as far as I can figure about a 30% overdrive. Only difficulty is that if I am going over about 5 mph it will grind slightly when shifted up or down, so I usually shift only while stationary. I understand that these were made only into 1928 and not thereafter. Can anyone give me ANY information on these units? I do know of only one other unit like this in the area. Thanks.

That is the way I understand how it works. The unit is a 2 speed rear end not a transmission with a clutch. There is no neutral so the unit is either in one gear or another.

When you shift from low to high back off the throttle and hit the clutch slightly as you shift. When shifting from high to low range
give it a little throttle and hit the clutch slightly as you shift.
Snap the rear end shift quickly so there is no chance if getting between gears. The rear end is a planetary underdrive. The direct ratio is governed by the ring and pinion ratio.

I imagine those Ruxtell rears for the A are pretty scarce...

Does anyone know if Columbia or Ruxtell made a 2-speed rear for the "other" cheap torque-tube car, the Chevrolet ?

Thanks Jim; I drove Stovebolt Chevies for years, and always thought it a cruel joke that GM never had an overdrive option until 1955, when they also offered the high-speed V-8 and auto-trannies and better rear-gears...

That blasted torque-tube makes adding OD a real pain...
