Running rich

I tried to stay true but I just wanted the car to run after all the work I have done so I replaced the original dist. (I just could not get it to run)with a new FS electronic dist. and the car started right up as soon as I turned the key and hit the starter. It runs like a scolded goose.

My problem is what is the correct float setting on a Zenith 1 carb (bought a completely re-built carb from a tried and true source). I have read everything from 1" to 9/16" of inch on the float level. I started at 1" but the plugs were soaking wet and jet black as you can not bend the float the only way to get below an 1" was to completely remove the gasket which got me down to 3/4" the car ran better at idle but after checking the plugs they were dry but still black (I cleaned them before putting them back in).

I'm sure I have a fuel air mixture problem and ever trouble shooting guide I have read always leads back to the float level.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You would want to lower the float level by adding gaskets to the valve not removing them.

With the body upside down you measure the float level from the base to the bottom of the first ring on the float right?

Now that you say that I see what you mean I'm going the wrong way.

Where do yolu take the measurement?

Thanks
John

Take a look at this page. Model A Basics Turn the carb upside down and from the top measure 5/8 of an inch. You should add or subtract washers until you get the float right.

Take a few minutes and look at the articles from Tom Endy at the bottom of the page. A good understanding of the Zenith Carb is important.
