I got a pair of them self adhesive running board mats and, was told not to rely on the adhesive. What is a good adhesive to use on these?
Thanks!

I've used 3M trim adhesive. We used the 3M trim adhesive for installing vinyl tops in the body shop, back in the day. The 3M trim adhesive can be purchased in tubes or in aerosol version, in yellow or black and can be found at Walmart or most parts houses.

I have used automotive GOOP it seems to bond most anything and seems to me to be better than contact cement.

I bought '31 mats from Brattons and used the self-adhesive. Stuff seemed pretty sticky. It's only been a year, but so far, so good. Just my experience. The warning you got: Was it based on speculation or experience? If it was from whoever sold the mats to you, I'd heed the advice, of course.

I used the original Weldwood contact cement to glue the matting on my 28 coupe's runningboards. It wasn't a good experience. I followed the direction - coated both surfaces, waited 15 or so minutes to let the cement get tacky and then installed the rubber matting. I ended up with bubbles forming under the rubber. I ended up using some plywood to clamp the areas with bubbles to hold the matting down. It turned out pretty well, but was not an enjoyable experience.

What about 3M 90? I have used 3M 77 in the past and it worked good. After a couple years my aerosol emptied and I noticed 3M 90 when I went to purchase more. Is 90 better?

Aermotor,
I think 3M 90 is suppose to be stronger than 3M 77 from what I have heard. I have used 77 in the past and it worked very well to glue the padding to the top of my 28 special coupe. I bought some 3M 90, but I haven't used it yet. I am think of using it on my runningboard matting. I will probably try to glue the matting on in the next month or two. I will try to remember to post the results here on Fordbarn.
