Running Alchohol

probably some old racer's out there.

how do you run engine on alcohol?

what kind of performance gain does it give you?

does it just take a Holley converted to alcohol

and away you go or is there more?

where do you get the fuel?

My understanding of alcohol as a fuel is that it is not as efficient as petrol. Something to do with thermal efficiency and its fast burn rate. You need gobs of it to make power, hence the supercharges on alcohol drag cars. Look at the trouble people have with ethanol based fuels and that is blended with petrol. Ethanol is alcohol.
I may be wrong but it is what I have been lead to believe.

here's another piece of the puzzle.

Holley Alky Jets.

'This Holley jet assortment kit includes 4 of each of the 24 new alcohol jet sizes, ranging from .132" to .200". These jets will not fit the standard Holley metering block. They are designed to fit only the Holley Pro-Series HP alcohol carburetor.'

that look's like 'just the official line'.

there's probably a fix for a regular metering block.

those are big jets!

this might actually be a good idea!:)

NO-GO!

there's a couple big obstacles to doing it.

like it eats up metal and takes special fuel pump.

a belt drive one so it really goes with injectors.

sort of a way serious type deal.

good part about Alky though is if you ever want

to run Nitro it's added to alcohol not gas!

back to the drawing board!:)

Alcohol as a motor fuel has a cooling effect. Sprint cars use it by injecting it on top and directly into the cylinder. They have a very small radiator. Alcohol requires nearly double the volume to make an engine run, and when the race car is shut off at the end of the race, gasoline in put in for a few minutes to flush the system for storage. Some guys are putting in big jets and using E 85 now, they get by with unheard of compression.

don

the one kind of alcohol fuel pump is a 'two stage'.

it works one way at idle and

another one on 'run'.

that kind of fuel pump sounds expensive.

if a regular fuel pump can just be

'alcohol proofed' this might be doable.

one advantage would be being able to use

10 to 1 or 11 to 1 pistons and running a lot

of ignition advance.

When I raced dirt tracks I progressed to late models after 6 years of ford sportsman.I switched to Chevys due to scarce supply of FE stuff in the 80's. After a few years we switched to alcohol, bigger fuel lines, fuel pumps, special carbs, more compression, more spark, made ton's of power, runs cooler. The top guys, many went back to race gas, you use so much alcohol in a long race, it changed the weight bias quite a bit.Lots of maintenance, I had alcohol dissolve the foam in my fuel cell once, burned a piston. Back in the 60's here in S. Carolina some of the dirt racers would run alchohol in there flathead powered cars. Learned from some of the older guys you could tell if they had alchohol from the blue exhaust flames. Knowing how things were back then, I doubt they did little more than change the jets.

Fordy's

this one's a head scratcher!:)

Speedway has electric fuel pump for alcohol for $110.

now that Barry Grant article sounds real common sense

about difference between idling on alcohol and 'off-idle'.

needs more digging into!:)
