Run a Model A on 100 percent ethanol

How do the Nitro products increase the power ?

Marc

Wikipedia explains it well,

The amount of air required to burn 1 lb (0.45 kg) of gasoline is 14.7 pounds, but only 1.7 lb of air is required for 1 lb of nitromethane. Since an engine's cylinder can only contain a limited amount of air on each stroke, 8.7 times more nitromethane than gasoline can be burned in one stroke. Nitromethane, however, has a lower energy density: Gasoline provides about 42–44 MJ/kg whereas nitromethane provides only 11.3 MJ/kg. This analysis indicates that nitromethane generates about 2.3 times the power of gasoline when combined with a given amount of oxygen.

Nitrous oxide on the other hand is simply an oxidizer. Think of it as liquid oxygen in a more stable, less reactive way. Nitrous oxide is injected with appropriate volume of extra fuel. More fuel/Oxygen=more power. Most NO2 kits have jets that allow for changing the amount of boosted power.
I had a 350Hp boost kit on a 68 Charger R/T, 500Hp + 350Hp boost = 1 kick in the *** when the button was pushed.:)

I remember reading that Henry was asked what would happen if gasoline was no longer available. His reply was something like this, fuel could be made from vegitable matter, even leaves from trees could be turned into fuel. I'm not sure if the model T was ever marketed to run on alky rub or not but I doubt it.

A nitromethane molecule incorporates two oxygen atoms per carbon and three hydrogen atoms. Thus, MUCH less air has to be loaded into the combustion chamber, so there's more room for more fuel. Although it can burn with no added air (or oxygen) it burns more completely with some added oxygen. Sorts out to a factor of about 2.5 increase in power. Because it is slower burning, flames may be seen coming out of exhaust.
