Were Rumble seat grab handles factory installed or all aftermarket ? if factory, special order and/ or which body styles?

Those actually weren't grab handles. Those were top rests for the top when folded down. They just made a handy place to grab onto,so a lot of them found their way onto coupes that didn't originally use them.

This was a dealer installed accessory for rumble seat coupes. In the show rooms, people would look at the roadsters with those shiny props on there and then want them for hand rails on the coupe they were going to purchase. Roadsters also had rubber bumpers for the back light glass protection but the top props were used on all roadsters whether it had a rumble seat or not.

Hello, per above post, yes , on a roadster there is an reinforcement plate under quarter panel the bolts go through, also as mentioned they are for top support when it is down, windows frame is supposed to rest on rubber bumpers but sometimes that doesn’t happen.

Did the top rests have backing plates underneath for support?

Here's a picture I took several years ago when re-assembling a Roadster body - looking upwards to show the placement of the angle iron reinforcement piece. I think that Brookville sells these or did at one time.

In addition to what Keith #2 said, they are also used for top tie downs.

There are also 4 rubber bumpers on the deck that support the rear window when down.
