Round vs Rectangular Spindles/ JS Chairpeople...

Is it addressed in the Standards as to when Ford went from the "round" type spindels to the "rectangular" type spindles? This is part number A-3105.

If not, will it be, and if so, just what is the time frame for that change?

Did the change-over involve any other changes associated with it?

Thanks.

Steve... I asked Marco about this last year, I think it is June, my car( 8-14-28)
and would just squeak in. Is it 60 days or 90 in the JS, know I can't remember.
They is a ton of stuff that needs to be answered on the 28's.

Steve,

Had this researched in February 2002:

A3107-A (the first engrg. design of 2-28-27) was obsolete on 7-18-27, well before inital 1928 production.

A3107-B was released for production 7-18-27. The drawing of 4-17-28 showes the spindle to still have the round bolt flange to mount the backing plate.

The next drawing for A3107-B dated 5-24-28, Revision 8858, shows the change to the straight vertical sides on the bolt flange to mount the backing plate. The Engineering Release record for part A3107-B on 5-24-28 states "Redesigned".

When there is no functional problem with a previous part, the assemble plants were directed to "Use until exhausted". meaning each plant used up existing inventory before using the newer part. In this case, the change could have taken place anytime from May'28 to July '28 in the respective plants. This is why the 60 day rule exists.

Part numbers did not always change suffix, even though it had many minor changes, mostly dimensional tolerances and resolation of manufacturing issues, during the model a years. This part number remained if effect until 1945.

I was advised that this information would be included whem the Judging Standards are revised.

Thank you Mr. Rude, just checking, do you have any idea what it looked like
or what the changes were? You would think they were using that spindle on the
prototype cars, which brings up other questions. Dudley

The research didn't provide any information about the 3107- A designed spindle or what changes were made when the "B" suffix came out.

I would suspect there were lots of changes made to various parts prior to the actual start of production of the model A.

I sometimes wonder if we will ever have all the answers for the very early "A"s ?
