Roof trim question

I have a question about the roof trim pieces. The rain gutter on the sides and the front and rear trim pieces (29 Std Coupe) are similar in that they have the base piece that is nailed along the roof line. Then the rain gutter or cap as applicable goes over the top. How do they attach? Do they slide together? Do they snap on? If they snap on, how do you do that?

Also - paint on these replacement parts is another question. They are aluminum and need paint. Do you paint them after they are on the car or before? If before, doesn't the paint make them tough to fit together? Seems like a tight fit, but since I don't know how to put them together, that may be the root of my issue.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Marco's site didn't really go into this detail. It is probably obvious to everyone, but me.....

Paint before
They snap together fitting the top side first then using a rubber mallett to engage the bottom.
Use some painters tape for added protection but have done them without it

Thank you very much. That makes sense. So, I assume the added thickness of paint (was going to use the same as on the body) is not an issue - or should I go with a thinner paint like rattle can spray paint? My paint guy was concerned that his paint adds enough thickness to be an issue.

It wont be an issue.. once snapped in place

Play with them first before painting so you see how they interlock...

I had mine powdercoated with no issues

rich b is right on; if you can find zinc chromate primer (banned in many areas or outright unavailable) , that has good adhesion. Suggest sprayed paint which can be touched up.

You are all the most helpful group of people. Thanks. My paint guy is excellent and is very confident in painting the aluminum. He just wasn't sure of the tolerances. He uses excellent paint products. I am loving the work he has done so far. It's these little details that always raise questions. This forum is great for a guy like me who is still figuring it all out. Thanks!

One more question - When putting the caps on, I am assuming you start from the middle and work out like you do when you tack down the bottom strip to help with making the curve. This would make finding that center point very important so the strip hits its marks on the ends. Am I correct in how I am thinking about this?
