rocker clearance

I need to rebuild the rockers assemblies on my 292. I have a new pair of shafts, but I need to know how much clearance is okay on the old rocker to the new shafts. Thanks

I’ve been working on ford motors since 1955 when I got my 55 custom line with a 223 six after that had a 272 and now I have a 292 with 91000 on the odometer. I don’t ever recall seeing numbers on what the rocker arm to shaft should be. Just always adjusted the valves when they got a little loose and away I would go.

The 57 Shop Manual specifies maximum clearance (difference between inside diameter of rocker and outside diameter of shaft) to be .006".
Good Luck,
Dave

Hello If R arms ID is over limits it is very expense to have them bored and sleeved. In old days it was common practice for machine shops to do it. It also hard to measure ID of arms with common caliper's.

Good information oldave, i looked in my 55 & 56 shop manuals and didn’t see this information. Im going back and review the text portion and maybe I’ll find it.
Cos is correct, very hard to measure ID without the correct small inside micrometer

Rocker Arms Unlimited could tell a person what clearance they use. They bush the rockers and hard chrome the shafts then grind back to specs. If the range in .001" to .003" the .0015" to .002" would be good for a target range.
