Roadster Windshield Problem

I took my 30 Standard Roadster out this past week to a cruise night and, because it was fairly warm, I decided to put the top down. I've only driven it this summer with the top up because I've had one of my kids with me every time. I was quickly reminded of a problem that has plagued me for years while driving with the top down.

The windshield stanchions pivot on their bolts and the whole assembly moves inward from the top. It eventually stops but the bottom of the windwings are well below the tops of the doors so you can imagine what happens if I try to open the door before pushing the top of the windshield back out. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? I've tightened the stanchion wing nuts as much as I dare without breaking them. Thanks.

I don't really understand. Is just the windshield coming in from the bottom, or is the top & windshield moving? If so where is it pivoting? Can you take a photo?

If just the windshield is moving, many repro windshield knobs are too long If you remove it, and if you screw a nut onto it and grind a 1/4 inch off (the nut allows you to clean the thread after you grind it) and your windshield will hold in different positions.

There is stops so the stanchions do not come back with the top down. You may need to build up the stops on the stanchions to keep this from happening. Look at where it finally stops and what stops it. The stainless can be easily welded up and ground down and polished so it will not show. When you look at the stops, you will see the wear area. It could also be on the sub stanchions where the wear is, but to repair this would mean repaint of the substanchion after the repair.

Thanks for the input. It is pivoting at the bottom of the stanchion. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it. I'm thinking it's a problem with the stainless post because mine doesn't look like that one.

If the windshield swings back and busts you one on the knuckles with your hands on the steering wheel, the repro stanctions are too high on the top pivot point, or the windshield frame too short where it meets the body in back of the gas tank. Get a thin, self adhesive body side molding or the like, made of rubber, and stick it under where the lower rubber windshield seal hits the body. You will only see it if you push the windshield frame forward, and will stop it from slamming back.
