Ring & pinion markings ?????

I have a ring and pinion gear set with the follwoing markings:

FORD B14 USA 1-A 4210-A THEN 165656 SHIFT #2

Can anyone give me some info on this gear set ? It is NOS and I would like to sell it and do not want to mislead anyone with bad info on it.
Thanks.....
Also anyone have any idea what I should ask for it ?

What ratio? The ratio is usually hand etched on the ring gear. If not, count the number of teeth on the pinion gear and count the number of teeth on the ring gear. Divide the ring gear teeth number by the number of teeth on the pinion. The result is your gear ratio.

Here is an earlier post describing the same situation-

1A narrows it to 1951 FORD but there is no cross reference for it in the 49/59 FORD MPC FINAL ISSUE. There is 1M which is MERC.

NOTE:

Thee information needed may be in the period MERCURY MPC. I do not have it and it is not in the period LINC MPC.

The ratio is a 3.31...I am presuming it to be for an automatic 55-56 T-Bird or Ford car. It is a 8.5" ring gear....

Yup, Fordomatic. A manual would be in the range of 3:70 to 3:90 if memory serves. With OD it would be 4:11 or lower.

The numbers on the pinion shaft and ring gear were for inter factory identification. These numbers don't show up in any parts books except under the final part number description because the ring & pinion were a matched set and were assigned a set part number. APA-44208-A is the set part number that they were matched to. This set was a 3.31:1 ratio and as already mentioned, it is for the initial Ford-O-Matic application for the 1951 Ford cars. This is a Ford rear axle that was used from 1949 through early 1955 with some adaptations in the later end of those production years. It should fit any of those years with the Ford removable third member type axle. It may need specific shimming for that ratio application as called out in the parts catalog.

It won't work with the Dana 44 used in station wagons or police cars. Those were the Mercury and F-1 types adapted for Ford heavy duty applications.

Reference: 1949 through 1953 Chassis Parts Catalog dated January 1953

FORD gave crossover charts for the sets-

4210 is the Basic PN for the RG and 4610 the Basic PN for the PG.

These are Engineering PN's and not Service PN's. It allowed ID when no other info was available and same method as bearing/seal ID No.

In the 49/59 MPC, you would cross the gear ID NOS to a complete Service PN (which had the Basic 4209 gear set) (4208 prior) and model type/year. You could then find a description of the complete/type rear end assy in the Shop Manual.

APA-44208-A was an early Service PN until a PN System change in the late forties/early fifties at which time it was superseded.

Replacement parts in the later years were likely all B5A-4209 series until fully obsoleted. Finding replacement parts for these old forerunners of the 9-inch is getting harder as the years go by. That set is kind of tall for the standard transmission cars but someone will want it if they are keeping the OEM axle as long as the set is still in good condition.
