ring and pinion set up

Has anyone used the new 33/34 10 spline 3.54 r&p .
they look really nice.
BUT ,to get the contact pattern and b/lash to be as they are marked on the new gear,( pic is pattern on the new gear before fitting it ) I needed to put a .060 shim under the pinion inner bearing to move the pinion deeper in.
I had put the same ratio in my 34. 22 years ago and had to do the same,
I am fitting the new one as it has the 10 spline on the pinion and hence can us the original d/shaft
I spent yesterday trying a thinner shim.(.040) but that would not get the pattern right.
Without the .060 shim, the pattern is right on the top edge of the ring gear tooth.just a thin line right on the tooth edge.
It seems strange that I need the shim in.
I,m sure the contact pattern is the important thing.
backlash is .007, and its easy to adjust that .
I am using NOS ford bearings on the pinion and new Tinkens on the carrier
Surely Im not the only owner who checks the pattern when fitting new gears.

I don't think originally, they used any shim to locate the pinion gear. I was told the original machine work was so close they didn't require pinion shims. I've taken a part about ten of them and there were no pinion shims. But I've never gotten around to assembling one yet. I rebuilt phone company modern rearends, lots and lots of them and all those rearends had pinion shims. I have a late '32 rearend with a new set of original Ford 3.54s to do one of these days so I'll find out. Maybe the reproduction gears take a shim. I have box of shims, hundreds of them left over from my phone company days. I've never checked to see if any of them would fit an early Ford pinion?

Lawrie I have experienced similar set up issues using the new gears as well recently. As you wrote a couple of decades back that was not the case the gears always set up nicely right out of the box no shims needed ever.
Adding the shim to accomplish the correct contact pattern is upsetting. I personal don't like any thin shim it increases the possibility of working its way out. Especially if abused by doing burnouts on a regular basis.

there will be no problem with the shim. I had some hardened ones in my stuff.
But is is a little bit annoying that a new gears needs it, when if you use an original gears they fit up. perfect.
I put a 3.78 from a rusty old wreck out in the bush into my 33 a while back, fitted nice and the pattern was spot on.

I agree completely I prefer an original Ford set every time never need any shimming. Fords machine tolerances were amazing.

Ronnie,
the 3.54 6 spline I put in the 34 a couple of decades back, is the one I took out to put the new 10 spline 3.54 one in.
The 3.54 6 spline that had been in for 20 or so years and needed the .060 shim then, has a really nice wear pattern on the gears , and will post a pc or two later ,tomorrow.
It will go into the spares shelf. with the modified 6 spline drive shaft.
Hopefully I want need it but my boys may in 20 or 30 yrs.
