Rim Spreader

I have an antique rim spreader...It's a tripod type of affair with a crank handle to expand the arms.. does anybody have a picture of how this thing is supposed to be used... does it expand the jaws to spread the rim or contract the jaws to shrink the diameter.. maybe both ? How would it be used on a T wheel... too install spokes or tires ?

It is used on split rim wheels to contract and expand rim to remove tires. If you don't have split rims it is not needed.
