Right There!

Years ago, I was giving the neighborhood kids a ride in the rumble seat of my '30 Coupe. Mac and his wife Virginia were out for their evening walk and stopped to visit with the adults while I was loading more kids in the seat.

Mac, who was always putting his wife Virginia down with off color remarks, said to the assembled crowd "We used to do it in that small seat!"

Virginia tickled us with her instant response "You never were any good....."

I'd driven the Open Pickup to Menards for a few small purchases. When I came out there was a girl standing by the truck and an older guy with his back to me was doing the unforgivable. HE WAS TOUCHING! When I got close I could tell that HE HAD TOUCHED A LOT! There were trails all over in the dust on the fenders and along the doors. I was pretty upset when I got up to him and the girl could tell. "Dad," she said in way of warning the perp that I was coming. He turned around with this lopsided grin on his face and ...
He was obviously blind.
In an instant, I was no longer P.O'd.
"Would you let me hear her run ... and maybe honk the horn?" he asked.
I obliged and then aoooga'd about five thousandths off the horn diaphram rachet.

I remember when I was about 16. I had my first Model A. It was a 30 coupe that needed a lot of work but it ran. I never picked up driving stick when dad took us out in the ol v.w. van so I knew I would now have to learn on my Model A. I remember being out in front of the house and dad standing watch as I tried to pull from the curb. I put it in first, let the clutch out a bit to fast and that car was jumping like a bucking bronco. I can hear dad yelling to "give it more gas"! I couldn't get my foot to the pedal because of the bucking. My seal at the gas gauge was shot so with all the jumping gas was running down on to my shoe. Dad's still calling out "Jamie, give it more gas" then I see on the porch on the other side of the street 2 old guys (like the characters in the balcony on the muppet show) laughing their heads off.
I was really embarrassed then, but look back now and the 2 gents faces make me smile.

About 92 or 93 when I was in my early 30's I drove my dad's Model A to meet some people at a state park. I pulled up to the station where a young girl was collecting the entrance fee. She stated the fee and I said "Senior Citizen Discount." She looked at the car and replied, "I'll buy it." I got in for the reduced rate.

33 years ago next month took my girl for a ride in my dad's 31 rdst. Drove over to the beach and asked her to marry me. Still got the car and the girl. Wonder, was it me or the car?

Fortyfive years ago last month I picked up a girl downtown "riding the circuit" in my 30 coupe. Yesterday we celebrateted our 42nt wedding anniversary. The coupe is still in the garage. So I don't know if it was the coupe our me she fell in love with! But it works for me.

When I was 16, and a student at Modesto H.S.(Modesto .CA.) I had a 28 Roadster w/rumbleseat. There was a football game in Stockton, CA. between Modesto and Stockton. I, with my girlfriend and another couple, took my A to Stockton. By the time the game was over it had become very foggy. As we were driving home on the 99 Hwy., which was 2 lane in those days, and I decided, due to the poor headlights and tail to get off the Hwy. and take a back road home. After traveling about 8 miles I missed a turn in the road, drove thru a fence and into a wet field, we were stuck. I walked to the farmer's house and told him what happened; he got out his tractor, pulled us out of the field and back on the road; he laughed and told us not to worry about the fence, but be careful going home in the fog, and keep your mind on driving and not the girls.
Gosh, that been a lot of years ago !!!!!

"Back when" I built a huckster painted highschool colors for my three kids to use at highschool functions. The huckster was sitting in front of my shop one day when it attracted a visitor that asked "Is that old a-model for sale"? I told him no. He then said,"what if a man wanted to buy that car? I replied that I could not sell for at least 3 years when my last child graduated high school. His next question was, "what if a man offered you $10,000 dollars for that car?" I said, "In that case I would have to say my, my, how time do fly!"

After just becoming senior citizens, and a young looking ones at that:cool:. the wife and I drove the tudor to the "Dinky Diner".
Parked right in front, went in, and was approached by the cute, young, (blonde) waitress.

"Neat car" said she, "thank you", "what year?", "1929" said I, "DID YOU BUY IT NEW?:confused::confused:".

After a short pause, there was much laughing by all and one very red faced waitress.

Right then. I'm 58. I've owned my '31 Tudor since 1967. Some years ago I was at a local carpet shop to purchase some padding for under my floor mats (an EXCELLENT idea, by the way... and period correct).

Clerk (young): "What are you doing with it?"

Me: "Insulating under the floor mats of a '31 Ford I've owned since high school."

Clerk: "Ooh. Did you buy it new?"

OUCH

Oh...

One early morning before a tour, I pulled through a Burger King drive through window to get a cup of coffee and when I pulled up to the window, the kid leaned out the window and said, "WOW!! Cool Car. Does it run?"

Uh... No, I'm pushing it around town to all the fast food joints in a mobile car show.

haha.

"and kid, by the way, HERE'S YOUR SIGN".

There was a story going around that some fella in an antique was pulled over by the Highway Patrol. The Trooper just wanted to be able to tell his Captain that He'd put his foot on a running board to give a ticket, just like the Old Man!

What I notice is a lot of cars whether passing me, driving beside me, or stopped at a red light, will roll down their window and not say anything. They just want to hear the sound of the Model A engine.
