retractable screw jacks

are the screw jacks suposed to have the exact amount of threads showing, if so how much and does any buddy know the correct way to do this, the shop manual is not to detailed on this?
 
I have removed my deck lid jacks one at time to clean their threads, greased and installed them again. I re-installed them and there didn't seem to be any problem with it as long as the both have the same load on them when re-installed. I didn't pay as much attention to the amount of exposed thread as I did about them both having equal loads.
 
I ran mine all the way out and then turned both in one full turn. Lid goes up and down as it should. Not sure that's the "right" way to do it but it worked for me.
