Restoring old chrome bumpers to new!

Removed my old, original front bumper from my '29 Tudor that had a lot of small corrosion dots on the surface since the replating over 30 years ago. I used an old Harley trick to make them shiny as new....just wad up a piece of aluminum foil and dip it in water....elbow grease...then wipe dry with a soft rag. I put on a good chrome polish afterwards to help prevent any more rust and corrosion. They look good as new after over 30 years of sitting and occasional chrome polishing with expensive products which really didn't work. I thing my wife paid a couple bucks for a box of Reynolds Wrap...have heard of using CocaCola instead of water but the water works great for me...and doesn't attract the ants in my shop! Try it....

The reason for the coke is the phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid is a prime ingredient in Ospho that we use to kill rust. The aluminum foil is a used as a mild abrasive.

I have had good luck with brillo soap pads as well.

After 35 years since restoration, my '28 Phaeton too has developed noticeable rust bumps and tarnishing. So I am happy to hear that there may be some hope of improvement. Thanks for posting.

What you propose is very temporary. It does not remove the damage if only masquerades it temporarily. Don't throw thtattinfoil away because you will need it again sooner than you think !
