Report on Timing Gear Below

Thanks for all the input regarding my possible timing gear problem. Tinkered with it this morning - changed distributor back to the original one which I had repaired prior to puching the car, swapped out a carb from another car, and started from scatch with the timing. It cranked right up and idled for 10 minutes in the shop. Then with my son following me, I took it for a road test. While I got an occassional backfire and it stalled at a stop sign one , it ran pretty darn good for about 10- 11 miles then started backfiring and died. Sounded like gas starvation, so sent my son out for gas and she cranked right up and ran well the 2 miles back to the house. I think that if I rebuild a carb and adjust it right my problems will be gone unless there is more rust in the tank. In which case its time to put a 'dirty-leg" on it. Thanks again for the advice. :):o:):o:p:);):):D.

You might want to check if the tank is venting properly. Try driving the car with the gas cap off. If your Gas cap is a 30-31 repo there is a good chance the gasket has rotated around the single rivit in the center and blocked off the vent hole.

I drilled and tapped the edge of the inside plate and gasket in the cap. I put a screw in with locktite and this keeps the gasket from turning and blocking vent.

I did the same sometime back when I experiened fuel starvation. I found the hole plugged. There are three parts you have to drill through; the gasket, a metal plate, and a brass thing.

Snyder carries an Eaton 30-31 reproduction gas cap that is like the original. It has two rivits in the assembly to prevent rotation of the parts.
