Replacing the top on a '29 Fordor

[ivoryjohn]

Does anyone have a link or article on installing the top on a closed car?

I need to know if it is a two man job or not?

There is some very good stuff on Marco's site: abarnyard.com
The entire tutorial in on a tudor but a lot of it will still apply to a fordor.

Just finished installing the top on a Jan 29 Briggs leatherback yesterday (Thurs). It came out better then I had expected with out any wrinkles or puckers. It was a two man job & the guy that helped me had done his earlier this year. The hardest part is being extremely careful when cutting outward on the rear seam you must be sure to cut along the wood tacking strip & be careful not to cut to far. I was not happy with the thinner padding now supplied with these kits. The guy that helped me ended up ordering two kits & we used the thicker padding which was supplied with these kits up to a month ago. The weather was on our side it was sunny & 85 degrees so the material stretched great. I still need to cut out the rear window & install the hidem & moldings. If you e-mail me I will send pictures &go into more detail. Good luck, Perry

Re: Replacing the roof on a '29 Fordor

If your 1929 Fordor is the "Leatherback" type, then you should look at the December 1930 Service Bulletin. It gives directions to replacing the roof material on a "Leatherback" Victoria. The tops are very similar.
You would be very wise to have a friend help you. One person pulls the material and the othrer one does the tacking.

I am showing my ignorance here, but where do I find this service bulletin?

There are several variations of reprints available of the Model A Service Bulletins. Most of the major Model A parts suppliers sell at least one version. You can also find them on eBay. I just looked a eBay and found this one and it is the one I would recommend. It is full size, not like the reduced size one found in the yellow hard back version, published by Post.

Item #360356055208. It is not my auction and I do not know the seller.

Item #160604973906 is on a CD. It is not my auction and I do not know the seller.

Thanks! I will look them up.

It can be done by one person, but is a job! Work in very warm tempatures so the material will streach and lightly tack first then pull tight again. The rear seam is the hardest so take your time when cutting the material. Service Bulletins do help, but do not explain in good detail. Article from Suppliers is not the greatest either.
