Replacing steering box and shaft.

I plan to replace my 36 Ford steering box and shaft . After I remove all the necessary items ,including the pitman arm ,does anyone know if the steering box and shaft will come out of the bottom of the car as one unit? I do not want to come out the floorboards it would be a hassle for me. I hope I made my question clear. Thanks.

I do not believe you will be able to remove it through the top or bottom without removing the floor boards.

Well, I have heard it has been done by pulling the gear out via the bottom. But, the steering wheel would need to be removed first. In order to do that you need to remove the light rod. Due to the length of the rod you will need to drop the steering column to give yourself enough lineal room to pull the rod out. That means you must remove the left floorboard. So, from a practical standpoint the easiest and fastest way is to pull everything out from the top. Unfortunately, there are no short-cuts that I am aware of for this operation.

Hope this helps.

I am trying to do the same thing. I can not get the steering shaft loose from the top of the box. everything is removed wheel light shaft and column cover. Sprrayed pb on the shaft at the collar on the box. Does it separate here or do i unblot the cover on the steering box? I just dont want to beat on it and damage something

Im not sure but i think the shaft comes out the btm of gear box,i know it does on a 37-40

Get a parts book and you will see an exploded view. The shaft and worm are one assembly and do not come apart easy.
