Replacing glass in '31 Fordor

I am installing all new glass in my 1931 S/W Town Sedan. The side window glass is original, and is stuck to the tracks with some kind of black, fibrous tar-like substance. I'm sure I will break the glass when I try to remove it, and was hoping someone has found a solvent that will loosen this stuff making it easier to remove the glass from the tracks and clean out the track to better install the new glass. I would appreciate any help.

I know it won't matter if the glass breaks, I'm just looking for a better way if it exists.

I will try that. I don't have the door panel off, so I'm working through the space in the top of the door beside the glass; not a lot of rooml

Similar situation a few years ago in one of my cars: I could barely crank the windows up/down, and there was a black sticky substance on the glass. I found that the window channel was made of layers glued together. Over time, the glue worked its way through the layer in which the glass slid, creating the situation you are describing. The solution was to replace the channels.

I was reading/thinking the lower channel, sorry.
That is a challenge…the front deep channel does have to come out to get the glass out.
Sounds like a ship object/chisel to start.
I dunno as I’ve never had that. But lot of experience with the slants
