Replacing Gas Guage Float

Gentlemen,

I think I know the answer to this question but will ask anyway.....

In order to replace the float do you need to remove the guage or is there another trick to it....I'm thinking you have to remove it.

My float appears to be sinking to the bottom of the tank.

Thanks

Nick

You remove the float through gauge on the dash I replaced it with newer non cork type also replaced the gaskets on the gauge

The special tools to remove the guage are available from the major suppliers, as is the float and gaskets. I recomend the cork gaskets, not the neoprene gaskets, which do not last well. The brass washers that are behind the mounting nut should be handled with care, and reused, with a drop of oil. They let the nut tighten without twisting the guage while tightening.
I suggest draining the tank down below the guage, and no smoking, or lamps near the work area.
The parts catalogs show the various parts, and their sequence of assembly.

Thanks guys for the quick response, just filled her up so I guess I'll have to drive her to run the fuel down.

And thanks Ray for the reminder to disconnect the battery before messing with it.
