replacing exhaust manifold

What are the typical problems encountered in replacing an exhaust manifold?
If I can get it off successfully should I buy the replacement coated with ceramic material? Thanks for your help!

Hi Frank,

Good to hear from you. Use a floor jack under the muffler to hold the pipe from the muffler firmly against the manifold while installing the clamp. Note that there are two different angles on the muffler clamp and you can get it upside down.

My ceramic started rusting after about 6 months so I had to use manifold paint on it. If I have to buy another I'll just buy the non-ceramic one and save the $$.

I had to replace both manifolds because the original had over a half inch ground off. I bought new studs in case I would need them but the entire project took 30 minutes and was very pleasant. I used a jack under the muffler to hold it up. The only problem came after I stared the engine, with all the exhaust leaks fixed I could hear all the new strange noises and had to get used to it.

Get the intake and exhaust manifolds machined together as a unit. Then use a new copper gasket. They will fit without leaks.

I replaced both manifolds as a set. They fit great to the engine but the exhaust outlet was not machined correctly and I had to do a little grinding on the manifold to pipe clamp. I got the set from Mac's if that's worth mentioning. It's not worth to trouble to send it back. The longer I have my A the more skeptical I've become with repro parts.

I see the exhaust manifold gaskets come in two types
a 2 piece Copper clad asbestos sandwich
b 1 piece asbestos

I was told that the two piece is what Ford Used on the later models, like mine?

Is two overlaping pieces really better would not that create an uneven thickness?
Do they overlap or just butt against each other...?

Frank,
They're held in proper position by the studs, copper is best & re-tighten several times. I have a set made of plain old composition material, they'd probably last about 5 MINUTES:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

these are two separate things..How can you get them machined together?
Are they clamped together somehow and then machined? Is that really necessary?
could that not introduce problems?? I understand to have both manifolds true to each other would be an advantage but seems like a problem to get them joined properly without mounting them to the engine.

The intake and exhaust manifolds are bolted together just above the carburetor.

Great to know! I'm just learning about such things.
Are those the two holes in the center of the manifold? I thought these are for bolting to the block?
Or does the bolt go through the intake and exhaust manifold and then into the block

The 2 holes in the center of the exhaust manifold should be threaded to accept bolts that go thru the intake manifold. The 2 flat areas on each manifold should be tight together when properly bolted.
