replacement water pump question

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for the veterans and current servicemen who protect our country.

I have a friend who is a newbie to the sport. He has a '30 Tudor. He wants to replace his clunking waterpump and after ordering a new leakless pump, found it would not fit because the ridge or shoulder where it inserts into the block is too high, preventing it from seating. His old pump has a low shoulder which is about the height of the paper gasket. the new pump has a shoulder which is higher than the gasket by about four times.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

JackD

I am thinking the shaft maybe longer than the one removed, touching the boss inside the head. Sum play do or something like it could be placed on shaft end to see the gap or lak of

You find lot's of variation in water pump bodies. Some are much heavier and thicker overall than the others. The end of the shaft can be ground if it is too long.

Sometimes a longer shaft is used because the boss/stop in the head is generally worn on old heads. You can remove material from the shaft to fit.
