I have a 41 tudor and need to replace the starter I'm not a dummy but I can't see how to take the old starter off to replace it. Any and all help would be apreciated.

It'll just be the two bolts at the front end of the starter that go through the starter itself and into the block. I'll draw ya up a gen-u-wine diagram.

Here's the picture version- If this doesn't help there ain't no helpin' ya!

the bendix onthe new one is larger and it will not allow the starter to go past the flywheel/bellhousing. You can make it work by doing one of three things-swap bendix, two grind off the new bendix to allow it to pass, third-grind off the inside of the bellhousing. You did not say what engine you have, but I know the 8BA/8CM/8RT are the worst

When reinstalling the starter you are going to have to insert the bendix at an angle, because the teeth on the bendix must be on the back side of the flywheel. Once you get it past the flywheel, piece of cake.

That looks like a new starter & there were instructions on filing down the bendix a little with mine, maybe the instructions were missing ?
Gary.

The bendix on the new is in the engaged position. There is a lock mechanism that needs to be released. Before you try to put it in again spin it with a battery and jumper cables. Be sure to block it against something because it will get away from you if you don't.

Regarding item #3, I removed both bolts but the starter separated leaving the armature and bendix unit still attached to the oil pan. Am I missing something or are there additional bolts holding the starter to the pan.

I apologize for my reply, a little effort (I didn't want to hurt the old girl) worked and the starter loosened up. Thank you..
