I have just attempted to repair a set of coil points by drilling out the little rivet that holds the cushion spring to the bridge and replacing it with a self tapping screw and then soldering the screw to the bridge. When I tested the coil with our hand cranked tester it showed good amperage and was not double sparking anywhere around the ring.
My question is, has anyone else done this and did it hold up to the considerable vibration and 'action' that goes on with these coil points?
The original rivet came loose and arced and then I hamfistedly hammered it flat trying to get some tightness back. This ruined the points of course. I do have another set of points with the same problem and I expect others have inadvertently flattened the rivet to the point where the cushion spring is held too tightly to the bridge. I hope to repeat the process with my other set of points. At $8.50 a set Canadian to buy, it could be worth the effort if it saves the points for another season or two.

Not impressed with the manufacture of the point set I might add.
