Repaint

Our 2 dr sedan was finished in 1974 & it is showing it's age. At the time when I did it I used glazing putty on all the small pits in the sheet metal that were the result of bare metal for years. Now I see small spots lifting all over & I'm guessing it is the glazing putty. If I ever get around to repainting it again, what should I use----- I just realized I won't live long enough to see it happen again. Thanks.

Since it's a driver...and aside from chemically stripping the putty and paint down to the sheet metal because the glaze putty is not adhering to the sheet metal and then iron phosphate the metal to enhance the primer to stick to the sheet metal and sealing the surface to avoid the enamel/lacquer reactions and top color coating, and maybe adding a clear coat...not much can be done.

A good spot sanding of the checked areas, and a touch-up can be done.
I would do that. Sand and touch-up.

Enjoy the car and watch the paint go a way. Let the next owner worry about all that.

skip.

Too many potential problems.

There are many mistakes made in the prep work of the paint. To make matters worse, paint back in the 1970 is more likely to allow moisture through. To try and touch up an area you might find the new paint causes the old to come off. Step carefully if you plan to touch up stuff. Some of the modern paints offer solutions, consult with someone that really knows his paints near you.

The only sure thing to do is remove all the paint and fix the rusty areas that are likely to have formed. Properly prep the metal and start out with epoxy and work your way up following directions on the tech sheets. WAYYYY to much work!

Do some tests with a touch up paint and think about how much you really need to fix the problems. Worry more about keeping the mechanicals in good shape, drive and have fun.

Yeah the old spot putty was just really thick laquer primer, u need to strip to bare metal and scuff area really well with at least 80 grit paper, make sure area is really clean and use a catylized putty shouldnt have any probs, has allways worked well for me! Good luck!
