Removing Window from 29 CCPU

Glass in both doors of my 29 CC pickup do not crank easily because track inserts are "chewed up". I want to replace the track inserts, but it hasn't been easy to remove the glass from the track.

Removed the screws from the upper trim and garnish molding. The garnish molding came off easily. Thought the upper trim would be released when the three screws at the top were removed. The trim remains firmly attached, though. Are there any more screws that need to be removed before the trim comes off the truck? I don't want to destroy the upper trim if I can help it!

If I can get the trim off, doesn't the glass come out by rolling the window all the way up with the top track removed? Then, shouldn't the window be able to be disconnected from the regulator arm and tilted in and up to remove it?

Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Doug

The trim you are trying to remove, I just removed on my 29 CCPU the past several days. Besides the three screws on the top, there are hidden retainer strips attached on the sides of the window with three screws in each strip. The outer trim slides over the retainer strip on the sides. I had my doors off, so I put them in an electrolysis tank for a few days to remove the rust that boded the outer trim to the retainer strips. It was still not real easy to get them off. The inverted U outer trim is slid over the strips. Maybe you could gently tap, using a hardwood block, the upper part of the outside trim to drive it upward. If the outer trim is really bonded to the retainer strips you might not be able to get the trim off without breaking the bond like I did with electrolysis. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the trim and inside retaining strips.

On the 28/29 pickup the surrounding upper moulding should slide up if not too rusty if I remember right. You may have to soak in oil for a few days then tap away with a hammer on a piece of wood. Be careful, the moulding is thin and will bend easily, work one end then the other and after clearing the top of the door try tapping up under the top horizontal area.

Thanks for the good information on removing the trim. Soaked the back of the trim with a lot of WD40 and waited about an hour. Tapping with a block on both sides got it moving. Carefully tapping got the trim off with no damage to the trim! Thanks!

Now, looking at the way the window channels are installed, I assume I'll have to remove the retaining strips and bend the old channels inward in order to get the glass out of the channels.

A previous owner glued the channels in place, so taking them out may be an interesting challenge. I'm thinking of getting replacement channels from Snyder's or other current supplier. Any recommendations?

Thanks again for the help,
Doug

Doug,
First, I have never removed or installed window glass in a CCPU (however, I will need to in the future). I think you have the right idea about lowering the glass and bending the felt side channels inward and sliding the glass out. Then reversing the steps to install the glass. The doors I just removed from my pickup and the side window trim retainers had the remains of a clip hook on the top of the felt glass channel. I think when you install the new glass channels; they will probably have a hook on the top. I think once you install the channels, slide the glass in and down, you can hook on the felt window guides on the top of the door channel. Then reinstall the trim retainer strips and then the trim piece. Since I haven't done it before, I could be wrong, but I think that is the way the glass and felt window guides are installed. Maybe someone that has done it before will respond if this is not the way it is done.

Isn't this the same as my 29 Tudor? I removed the door cap, then the screws holding the crank mechanism to the door panel, so I could slide it out of the window lift channel. Then the glass lifted up and out the top of the door. Then the clips can be bent to remove the two side felts/channels. Be sure you buy the felts with the clips already riveted in place.

To install, just reverse the removal. Install the felts/channels on the sides, then bend the clips to hold them in place. I hooked the top first, then bent the bottom clip, then installed the glass. Then engage the lift mechanism and screw it in place. I grease the slides at the bottom. Even though they look like rollers that should spin in the lift channel at the bottom, they are riveted tightly in place and DO NOT spin.

Doug,

There is a clip at the bottom of the channel. Most of the new kits have clips for the bottom of the channels and small flat head screws that attach them in the window opening area. It actually works pretty good.

When you buy the kit you will also get bumpers for the glass for when it is lowered. Don't even try to replace them with the bumper brackets installed in the door. Drill out the rivets and remove them. Install the new rubber bumpers and pop rivet the brackets back in place.
